I Don’t Practise Golf Because I Don’t Know Any Drills

So you want to improve your golf game. You’ve been puting in the time and you’re slowly building calluses on your hands. After learning the basics of golf you realize there is so much more to learn. From your grip, to your stance, to your swing, you start wondering how you’re suppose to remember all those details. How can you master and think of all the movements you need to do when a swing takes less than 2 seconds! You feel overwhelmed and you don’t know what to do next so you reach into your bag of excuses. You don’t practise golf because you don’t know good practise drills.

Mastering the golf swing is a very complex task so the first thing you want to do is break it down in smaller, more manageable chunks. You also need to take your goals into consideration. If your goal is to improve your golf game, then you need to realise this is not a goal. It’s too big and too vague. If you’re a beginner then your goal should probably be to practise your short game. Pick one and only one thing to focus on, like putting or chipping.

Once you’ve decided what you want to work on you need to break it down even more. This is where golf drills come in. The most important part of any drill is this: it must be something you can easily do everyday. If the drill requires specialized equipment or if it takes 20 minutes to setup, guess how long it will take you to give up? Do yourself a favour and pick something simple you can do whenever you feel like it.

If you think you can’t practise golf because you don’t know any drills you’re probably just taking the easy way out. Chances are your short game requires some attention so start with the easiest putting drill ever. In this day and age of the Internet, finding golf practice drills is the easiest thing ever, take a look here, here or here.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when learning a complex skill like a golf swing. What you need to do is split things up in smaller pieces you can easily handle and tackle them in a strategic way that will help you reach your goals. Lastly, when you run out of golf practice drills, just turn to the Internet and practice your searching skills.
